RKV Medical Center provides convenient on-site access to diagnostic imaging services—including CT scans, mammography, X-ray, and bone densitometry. Having them available on-site allows your care team to receive high-quality images quickly and make timely, informed decisions about your health.
CT Scans
What is a CT scan?
A CT (Computed Tomography) scan uses X-rays and computer technology to create highly detailed images of your organs, bones, and tissues. It helps your physician diagnose conditions, plan treatment, and monitor your progress.
How to prepare
Abdomen/Pelvis CT:
- No food or drink (except water) after midnight or for 8 hours before the exam.
- Drink plenty of water the day of your scan.
- Some exams require oral contrast, which you will take 1–2 hours before your appointment.
All other contrast CT scans:
- No food or drink (except water) for 4 hours prior.
What to expect
You’ll lie on a table that moves through the CT scanner. The exam is painless.
If IV contrast is used, you may briefly feel warm or taste metal—this is normal and passes quickly.
How long it takes
Most CT scans take 10–20 minutes.
If oral contrast is needed, allow an extra 30 minutes.
Mammography
What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast used to detect breast cancer early—often before symptoms appear.
How to prepare
- Avoid deodorant, lotion, or powder under your arms or on your breasts the day of your exam.
- Wear a two-piece outfit for easier changing.
What to expect
Your breast will be gently compressed for a few seconds to capture clear images. Discomfort is minimal and temporary.
X-Ray
What is an X-ray?
An X-ray produces images of the inside of your body—especially bones and certain organs. It’s commonly used to evaluate injuries, infections, and other conditions.
How to prepare
Most X-rays require no special preparation. You may be asked to remove jewelry or put on a gown.
What to expect
You’ll be positioned by a technologist, and the exam is quick and painless.
Bone Densitometry (DEXA Scan)
What is a DEXA scan?
A DEXA scan measures bone density to diagnose osteoporosis, assess fracture risk, and monitor bone health over time.
How to prepare
- Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before your exam.
- Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners.
What to expect
You will lie on a padded table while a scanner measures bone density in your spine and hips. The exam takes 10–15 minutes and is completely painless.
