Medical Oncology

Medical oncology focuses on treating cancer with medications such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, biologic agents, and oral (pill-form) cancer treatments. These therapies work in different ways—some destroy cancer cells directly, others boost the immune system, and some block the pathways cancer cells use to grow.

Treatment may be used on its own or as part of a comprehensive plan that also includes surgery, radiation therapy, or hormonal therapy.

Because every person’s cancer is unique, treatment schedules vary. Some therapies may take only a single day, while others run for several days in a row or continue on an ongoing basis.
